Arthur C. Cordwell, Esq.

Arthur C. Cordwell is the founding partner of Cordwell, Holloway & Feltner, LLP, and one of the nation's foremost authorities on puppet and felt-entity tort litigation. Since establishing the firm in 2002, Mr. Cordwell has represented plaintiffs in over 300 cases involving puppet-inflicted injury, handler negligence, and felt-entity product liability. His practice draws on more than 22 years of experience in civil rights and personal injury law, with a particular emphasis on the unique evidentiary and jurisdictional challenges that arise when one or more parties to a dispute is a puppet or puppet-adjacent entity.

Mr. Cordwell served as lead counsel in Daniels v. The Puppet (2001), the case widely regarded as having established the doctrine of handler vicarious liability in puppet tort proceedings. The ruling, which held that a handler bears strict liability for the foreseeable actions of a puppet under their operational control, has since been adopted by courts in 38 states and the District of Columbia. Mr. Cordwell has argued before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit on multiple occasions and has been admitted to practice in all 50 states, a credential he maintains in part due to the interstate nature of most puppet-related claims.

Prior to founding the firm, Mr. Cordwell spent four years with the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division, where he investigated allegations of discrimination involving non-traditional animate entities. His early work at the DOJ provided the foundation for his later scholarship on the constitutional standing of felt-based lifeforms, a subject on which he has published extensively. He holds a Puppet Law Certification from the National Institute for Felt and Textile-Material Negotiations (NIFTMN), one of only twelve attorneys in the country to hold the credential.

Mr. Cordwell is known for his rigorous approach to case preparation and his refusal to engage in mediation or arbitration proceedings in which a puppet serves as mediator or arbitrator. He has stated publicly and on the record that this position is grounded in procedural due process concerns, not personal animus. He is a frequent speaker at the American Bar Association's annual Non-Human Entity Law Symposium and has served on the ABA's Standing Committee on Puppet Jurisprudence since 2010.
